چکیده

A review is given of recent theoretical work on the superfluid dynamics of trapped Bose gases at finite temperatures, where there is a significant fraction of non-condensate atoms. One can now reach large enough densities and collision cross-sections needed to probe the collective modes in the collisiondominated hydrodynamic region where the gas exhibits characteristic superfluid behavior involving the relative motions of the condensate and noncondensate components. The precise analogue of the Landau-Khalatnikov two-fluid hydrodynamic equations was recently derived from trapped Bose gases, starting from a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate macroscopic wavefunction and a kinetic equation for the non-condensate atoms. Bose–Einstein condensation of atomic gases

The discovery of the superfluid transition of liquid helium [1, 2] marked the first achievement of Bose–Einstein condensation in the laboratory, more than a decade after Einstein’s prediction for an ideal gas [3, 4]. Together with superconductivity, they o↵ered the first examples of macroscopic quantum phenomena and as such constituted a milestone in the history of Physics. The quest for the un...

The Hydrodynamic Equations of Superfluid Mixtures in Magnetic Traps

The hydrodynamics equations of binary mixtures of Bose gases, Fermi gases, and mixtures of Bose and Fermi gases in the presence of external potentials are derived. These equations can be applied to current experiments on mixtures of atomic gases confined in magnetic traps. The recent discoveries of Bose-Einstein condensation of atomic gases [1–3] have generated much interest in studying dilute ...

Shell Models of Superfluid Turbulence

Superfluid helium consists of two inter-penetrating fluids, a viscous normal fluid and an inviscid superfluid, coupled by a mutual friction. We develop a two-fluid shell model to study superfluid turbulence and investigate the energy spectra and the balance of fluxes between the two fluids in a steady state. At sufficiently low temperatures a ’bottle-neck’ develops at high wavenumbers suggestin...

Calorimetry of a Bose–Einstein-condensed photon gas

Phase transitions, as the condensation of a gas to a liquid, are often revealed by a discontinuous behaviour of thermodynamic quantities. For liquid helium, for example, a divergence of the specific heat signals the transition from the normal fluid to the superfluid state. Apart from liquid helium, determining the specific heat of a Bose gas has proven to be a challenging task, for example, for...

Bose-einstein Condensation at Finite Temperatures: Mean Field Laws with Periodic Microstructure

At finite temperatures below the phase transition point, the Bose-Einstein condensation, the macroscopic occupation of a single quantum state by particles of integer spin, is not complete. In the language of superfluid helium, this means that the superfluid coexists with the normal fluid. Our goal is to describe this coexistence in trapped, dilute atomic gases with repulsive interactions via me...
